DD-WRT is a wonderful open source custom router firmware that is supported on many devices. It adds features, stability and configurability to consumer routers. However, it's not easy for a novice starting out with DD-WRT. There hasn't been an official stable release since 2008.

The DD-WRT site has some excellent instructions on doing the installation, I’ll avoid repeating those but will document the steps I took.
