These are what a college or a big store buys, so that they can have one network, with centralized and authoritative services, but with lots of radios to cover a big area. From there, you can hook up your own wireless router and create your own wireless/wired network upstairs with all your computers and devices. Granted, this is if Cox allows you to have 2 modems in the same house. And if they do, I'm betting they won't let that go for free. The easiest way to connect two routers is by using Ethernet. A second (new) router which doesn’t have wireless capability must be connected to the first (existing) router via an Ethernet cable. Plug one end of the cable into the new router’s WAN port and Plug the other end into any free port on the first router other than its WAN port.

BUT if you want internet access without your "brothers" interference you will need another DSL/Cable connection to the internet! You can add another router "behind" the existing one but the ability of the second router can easily be controlled by the first one!
There is no way to have 2 modems hooked up to the same single service account. When I tried to get 2 separate optimum services setup in my house (wife worked from home and her job required dedicated internet because her company is fucking stupid) optimum would not, because they said they could only hook up one account per physical address.
